"I couldn't help but wonder..."

By Rebecca Young on Jul 13, 08 08:39 PM

I finally went to see Sex and the City: The Movie the other week. I may have been a little "fashionably late" but it was definitely worth the wait. To me, though, the storyline came in a close second to the fashion. And boy, did I LOVE the fashion!

If you were to bump into Patricia Field (the iconic stylist who put together the outfits for the four Sex and the City women for both the TV series and the film) I have a funny feeling that you would probably take one look at what she was wearing herself and say you'd never let her pick an outfit for you! However, I would say never judge a book by its cover.

Tracking the Sex and the City series throughout its 6 year run, you can start to see when the fashion takes more of an integral part and this is mostly down to Field. When the movie got the go-ahead, there was no one else who could possibly do a better job styling New York City's most fashion-forward and fabulous women.

Whist the film was being shot back in 2007, press shots of the girls' outfits soon started appearing in magazines, newspapers and on the web. I was fascinated by what was coming up and couldn't wait to see everything come together in the film. And I certainly wasn't disappointed.

From the Vivienne Westwood wedding dress to the Jimmy Choo shoes, every outfit and accessory was meticulously planned and perfected for each of the characters. I must admit though, Carrie's outfits were some of my favourites, in particular the floral strapless prom dress perfectly accessorized with a sleeveless overcoat in a clashing floral pattern, a black leather studded belt, a gloriously kitsch Eiffel Tower purse and her signature killer heels. It may sound hideous when I describe it but believe me, it's pure Carrie perfection!

As much as I would love to be able to afford Carrie's wardrobe, I am sadly lacking in funds, so I turned to my favourite website asos.com to see what "in the style of" treasures I could unearth. They haven't disappointed, and I'm currently coveting their version of Carrie's studded black leather belt (ASOS Pyramid Stud Waist Belt in the style of Sarah Jessica Parker, £15 www.asos.com) and the ASOS Hard Case Purse in the style of Sarah Jessica Parker, £15. I think you'll agree that it's a small price to pay to get just a hint of that Carrie magic!
