Can't get the staff
Despite doubtlessly owning a calendar with the dates of council meetings on them, the staff at Newcastle Council seem to be having a problem getting reports ready.
At last night's full council meeting the Labour opposition refused at first to back a preliminary health report.
As Nick Forbes rightly pointed out, surely it would be a lapse in judgement for any authority to approve a report which includes the lines "the programme involves XXXXXX" and promotes aims which "coincide closely with those of Newcastle's Sustainable Communities Strategy [add some detail]".
The Libs insist it is early days and the report is just a taste, so passed it was.
But wait, what's next? A report from officers urging council to back a crime strategy it has not yet seen? By now the chamber was for once united in its scorn.
Perhaps the staff are just assuming no one reads these things anyway?
