Breaking myths: Weather, ode to the grey colour

By Marc Vargas on Nov 26, 08 04:27 PM

Remember, one of my favourite expressions in english: "Is not that bad".

Yes, that's what I think about british weather. When I speak with people here, normally they think in Barcelona or Menorca is always sunny and warm. Wrong.

Well, you know the famous quote, There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics. In my opinion, the fourth kind are weather reports (just a personal opinion) but check this out: Weekend's weather report for Menorca: Saturday, Cloudy with rain. Low temperature: 10ºC, probably less because of the dampness (59%). Sunday: Cloudy and more or less same temperature.

Honestly, the huge difference is on springtime because during the winter yes, there is a difference (overall january-february) but again, is not that bad.. Newcastle is colder and rains/snows much more than in Menorca but more about the weather or the rainfall is about the "atmosphere" of the city and I understood that when my parents came last March. They said they coudn't live here, "is that colour, Newcaslte is grey". My parents are great, beautiful, smart, funny, caring, understanding... (yes, they read this blog as well) and they said the magic word: "grey".

Most of the times, the sky in Menorca is blue, if not, you have the sea all around you so we could say Menorca is blue. But what's wrong with colour grey? Have you seen Newcastle when it's raining? (ok, stupid question) The city is really beautiful, this grey colour starts to shine, it's an oxymoron maybe, the beautiful sad grey colour of the streets shining. I love it and I love rain (as long as you have an umbrella of course).

Probably is just psychological, you just have to get used and don't expect a sunny day every morning, is not that difficult, right? I was very suprised last spring because when a sunny day appears is like a party, everybody takes public parks and just lay down trying to absorb as much sun as possible. Is the "sunny celebration" or the "sunny revolution" (beautiful revolution indeed), everybody is happier, people go to the coast, shops and cafes are empty and just the places with an outside area survive... Really surprising.

The problem appears when tourists come to Menorca in summer, they are like hypnotized with the strong sun and they go to beach every day from 8am to 6pm, like a working day. That causes the "lobster effect", but we will talk about that later...

Hi, we have short summers. But if the summers were longer the English would moan it's too hot. Graham-Logo-n-stitch.
