Menorcastle (and 2)
After my presentation I think it's time to be serious... at least, be more specific, because leave Menorca and Barcelona to go to Newcastle just to "fly away" is not enough, come on Marc, confess, what are you doing here?
Ok, there is another reason. There is a woman. There is a "She". Can you imagine a most powerful reason to leave your country? (criminal reasons aside...) "She" is from Lleida (160 km from Barcelona, where we met) and she is studying here at university. "She" is great, beautiful, smart, funny, caring, understanding... and she reads this blog...
Normally people has one "first time", well then, in my case, I have two "first times". We are talking about visiting Newcastle ok? I remember when I first came here about three years ago to visit "She".
Direct from Barcelona and without any information about the city, I just knew what she told me by phone ("It's freezing, it's raining every day, I want to come back...") I can't remember the weather when I arrived, I just remember on our first night we went to a restaurant. I wanted to pay the dinner like the main macho character of a movie I went to the bar and with my best intentions I asked "How much is it for all of that?" The barman, a bit surprised answered me "What, all the bar??". First lesson: You have to ask for THE BILL.
The second "first time" was last year when I moved here. I've got a lot of anecdotes because you know, there is a long way between the English language you learn in Spain and the real one.
Obviously the first step was look for a job. I wanted to work in a library or in a bookstore because of my studies so I went to a recruitment company asking for vacancies and a pleasant woman told me "ñlakdjsfljdf alskdfjasfljk near Fenwick lñjdsafjlkfads CV". She meant "there is a Waterstones near Fenwick, you can hand in your CV". Ok, Fenwick, Fenwick, have you seen the store? Is FENWICK, not "PHOENIX". ItÃÅœs embarrassing ask people if they know where PHOENIX is... what Phoenix? In the USA??
Finally I found Waterstones and I handled (handed) my CV. Yes, lady called me for a "phone interview" (45 seconds) but they quickly understood my English wasn't good enough. I didn't understand a word what she said. Finally I found a job in a café in the city centre where I worked until las summer. Nice people there, they were like a family for me and I always be grateful with them, they gave my first job here!
There is a lot of british people living in Menorca, I know some people who is living there for ages, they look happy in the island, they have their own "british areas" with british supermarkets, british shops, british business installing Sky... I don't know, I've been thinking about their adaptation in a new country, in a new island but yeah, I'm sure they are happy because when you ask them in catalan or in spanish they just smile...
