Public sector job cuts

Treasury Minister Yvette Cooper has just signalled that a rise in Government borrowing will be at least partially financed by "efficiencies" in the public sector.

That will upset unions and worry many staff in the North East, where around a third of the workforce is employed by the state.

The region has also already seen large reductions in public sector jobs and it begs the question about whether efficiencies will lead to further cuts - and where those people will get jobs.
