Musical Interlude

By Mieka Smiles on Dec 19, 08 12:39 PM

If there was a law against liking bad music, I would definitely be prosecuted.
On the face of it all, I can come out of a conversation about music looking quite normal. But lurking underneath the thin veneer is a murky underbelly of naffness, just waiting to escape.

Put it this way, if anyone ever looked at my iPod playlist I would instantaneously die. Just today, for example, I couldn't locate it and I panicked. But luckily I did and my sordid secret songs are safe, for now...

Just to give you a hint, I'll list a few of the artists currently included (I am 27):

· Bonnie Tyler
· Cher
· Donna Summer
· Whitesnake

And believe me, it gets much, much worse. When I was 13 it wasn't posters of Leo that were plastered all over my walls. No. I had posters of Michael Jackson and Bjork. The latter fell out of favour a long time ago but my MJ obsession is still going strong. I think he is a musical genius. Not so long ago I did a drunken 'presentation' to my sister's then boyfriend outlining exactly how and why this is indeed the case - I had audio visual prompts and everything. My friends and family berate me about my love for Jacko at every single opportunity. Whenever he does something a bit strange (which I grudgingly admit is quite regularly) they use it against me, thinking I will take it as a personal insult. Which, of course, I do.

I am also a massive Britney fan. I admit, I was almost ready to throw in the towel during her 'difficult' year of 2007. But I stuck with her and now she is back on top. Thank the Lord. So on the extremely vague possibility that my quite frankly appalling musical preferences are shared by anyone reading this blog, here is something to brighten your day. My two worlds of greatness colliding back in 2001. Enjoy (or don't as the case may be).

When I was about 17 I loved Adam Rickett's song "I Breathe Again"... A brilliant song. In fact, my sis bought me the album a few years ago with other classics such as "Everything My Heart Desires"!

I remember buying a crazy song in the nineties called 'doop' and dancing round the living room to it. Don't tell anyone though ...

Hmmm, let me think. I guess it has to be 'Too can play that game' a Bobby Brown number from the 90's. I find it embarrassing listening to that song now mainly because me and an old school friend used to practice the dance from the video religiously and spent a lot of time stomping around my mums living room.
Oh the good old days......

Even the hardiest of Rock Geeks has such skeletons in their iPod/closet. Ferinstance, there's a few of the rock elite that like George Formby (Bowie, apparently, and George Harrison was a big ukulele fan).

The only question is: do you like it? If the answer is yes, then nobody else's opinion should matter.

That said, I'm personally heartily sick of Hostage Brituation, Britmas '08 and anything to do with that woman!
