Does fashion harm the environment?
Tonight members of the public are invited to join students at Newcastle University in the 'Waste Debate' which looks at this question and also to take part in a clothes swap.
The debate and clothes swap are the closing events of Newcastle University Students' Union's 'Waste Resolution' day, an event aimed at the City's students, to show them how they can reduce their waste.
According to Joe Millar, organiser of the Waste Debate, various issues arise from the question 'Does fashion harm the environment?' including:
What difficulties arise from the prevalence of cheap clothes available on the High Street?
Do our fashion habits encourage us to dispose of clothes quickly and create waste?
Is enough effort made to recycle clothes (is there enough information available about this)?
Are the ways in which clothes are often produced - quickly, cheaply, with man-made materials, and afterwards shipped from abroad to be sold - problematic both morally and ecologically?
If we chose alternative sources for clothes, would there be negative consequences for manufacturers and the people they employ, as well as damage for the country economically at a time of growing economic crisis?
Speakers include Martin Collins, North East Regional Policy Coordinator for the Green Party and Doug Miller, Lecturer from the University of Northumbria School of fashion
The debate will start at 7.30 in the Basement of Newcastle University's Students' Union building.
Everyone who attends is asked to bring a bag of clothing which can be swapped at the end - so there is something for everyone!
Any donations on the door and money raised through our tombola will be going towards Send a Cow, a charity which runs sustainable agriculture programmes across the world in an aim to reduce poverty.
