Oz & James Drink in the Cumberland

By Brenda Boyd on Jan 12, 09 10:37 PM

One evening last summer we decided to go the Cumberland Arms for a drink after a fairly short Tyne Bridge practice. It wasn't particularly crowded and we managed to get a table near the bar.

The bar door opened, I looked up from my drink and sort of recognised the face of the man entering.

"If I didn't have know better I'd swear it was the middle one off Top Gear" I thought to myself "but that's rather a flowery shirt."

Then a long faced bald man walked in - the image of Oz Clarke - followed by people with a camera, recording gear and clipboard, for it was James May and Oz Clarke on their drinking tour of Britain.

The clipboard lady came around and asked us all individually if we minded them filming, and promised that they would do their best not to get anyone who minded in shot. No one seemed to have any objections. Besides which they managed to get the filming done without interfering much with the enjoyment of the drinking public.

Watching the first episode of Oz & James Drink to Britain last Tuesday I did managed to spot the few seconds of film of the former crossing from the bar to the corner they were drinking in. It's 3 minutes 4 seconds in for those of you who have BBCiplayer.

Part of this week's episode is in Newcastle so there may be more. Look carefully and you may even see the back of the Drummerman's head.

Cheers
