Pie Eyed
WHEN I get hungry, I get mad. Not just mad in the angry sense but mad in the mad person sense. My husband is well aware (or at least after nine years together should be well aware) of this so-called 'quirk'.
Yes, when the hunger hits I start to shake and scavenge around for food like a furious beast. In fact sometimes I get so hungry it takes control of my actions...
I have been known to stop by petrol stations on the way home from work to satisfy my craving for food, even when I know my dinner will be on the table waiting for me. And I have ruined plenty of meals out. When friends book the table for 8.30pm I start to worry. I just know I won't be able to last the distance without my stomach actually eating itself. I therefore prepare myself a type of 'pre dinner dinner' thus spoiling my actual dinner dinner. When my husband spots me at it, he merely shakes his head in pity. "What!?," I demand indignantly. "Can't I eat if I'm hungry? Are you trying to suggest I'm fat?"
So when it comes to 6pm, and I'm still on the train home from work, it's fair to say I could eat a scabby horse. I stare from the window, dreaming of the delicious meal my husband has ready and waiting for me when I get home. Could it be one of my all-time favourites like seafood linguini? Or could it be gloriously fresh cod wrapped in Parma ham, dappled with sun blushed tomatoes? No hang on...he could be waiting with something a touch more exotic. A Moroccan lamb tagine with couscous perhaps? But sadly, No. It's not any of the above. Sadly, it's my least favourite food of all time. Sadly, it's pie...
