Why I won't be upgrading my camera anytime soon

By David Brennan on Jan 13, 09 01:27 PM

This all started with a phone call from the local camera shop to tell me that they now have the new Canon 5Dmk11 in stock and would I be interested in having a look. "Yeah", I said, "I'll have a look at it but I won't be buying one anytime soon." "Oh" was the reply, "Why not?"

There are a number of reasons why I won't be upgrading to the 5Dmk11 and, maybe surprisingly, the launch price of £2200 isn't the main reason. If I really wanted one I'm sure I could get it for less than that on the internet. No, there are plenty of other reasons to stick with what I've got. Firstly, I'm not one of those who must have the newest gear within hours of it being released. Sorry Canon, never have been, and at 40, I guess I never will be now. Secondly, do I really need it? Yeah, all the pre-release reviews have said that this camera is probably one of Canon's best with a massive 21MP full frame sensor, excellent noise control and bettered at the minute, only by Canon or Nikon's pro range cameras, but at the end of the day, I get the shots I want with the gear I already have. Therefore why put my hand in my pocket for something new. It's not just the camera either. There are also the other things that I'd need. The camera takes different batteries, so the spares I have for my 40D won't work, not that they would fit the new style battery grip anyway, which is something else I'd need to buy. Then we come to lenses. I've currently got 5 lenses I can use on either of the 2 camera bodies I currently have. However, 2 of them are designed to be used with cropped sensors, so wouldn't be totally compatible with a full frame sensor, so a new wide angle lens would be needed. More expense. Finally, the images I take using my current gear can be comfortably printed at A3 size and can even go to A1 if necessary. If I can get great images printed at that size already, do I really need the extra megapixels and larger sensor the new camera offers? Maybe I would, if I was taking photos for a living, but seeing as that's not likely to happen any time soon, that's another tick in the reasons not to upgrade column.

What I've got at the minute works for me, simple as that. Yeah, it might be nice to have the latest, top of the range camera in my hands when I'm taking photos, but as most people should know by now, the camera is only as good as the person holding it.

So there you go Mr Camera Shop Assistant. That's why I'll willing have a look at the latest offering, but my money will stay firmly in my pocket.
