London Fashion Week Pt2

By Liz Lamb on Feb 23, 09 08:04 PM

IT'S been another whirl of catwalk shows, parties and people-watching.

After the Vivienne Westwood show on Saturday night I went for a late dinner at Gary Rhodes restaurant in the West End followed by a drink or two in the Carbon nightclub.

This wasn't such a great idea when I had to be at the Betty Jackson show at 9am

But that's fashion week for you. You have to work hard and play hard.

One of the most interesting things I have witnessed this week is that where you sit in a fashion show determines just how important you are.

Your status is defined by your seat.

For example, Kanye West, Erin O'Connor and Nicola from Girls Aloud all had front row seats at Vivienne.

MeanwhiIe I was in the balcony area and should have brought binoculars!

At Jaegar and Nicole Farhi I felt blessed to have a seat. At other shows I was 'standing only' which basically means filling the gaps when all the important fashionistas have taken their places.

If you are a celebrity you are guaranteed a front row seat...Erin O'Connor, (at Vivienne and Jaeger) Jo Wood (at Jaeger) and Jane Asher (at Jasper Conran) all had a coveted place to rest their legs.

Another way to get a bird's eye view of the catwalk is if you are an important member of the fashion press.

Suzy Menkes, fashion writer at the International Hearld Tribune, always makes the front row as does Alexandra Shulman, editor of Vogue.

For other mere mortals you have to stand at the back, strain your neck and be thankful you actually got a ticket (there were some shows where I clearly failed to make the grade).

Party invities also determine your worth. If you are a celeb or fashion bigwig then your names on the list and you are in.

Last night I went to the 99 pink balloons party at The Met Bar and it was a colourful affair with candy floss, cocktails and champagne.

But how soon the fashion pack departed when the free drinks stopped flowing and the goodie bags ran out.

At £15 a drink I didn't blame them.

There is always another party to go to and another free bar to drink dry.

After the Met Bar it was off to Mahiki for the Select Model Management party. You could hardly make it to the entrance because of the number of paps.

I expected celebrities galore but again status is everything.

The club had a banding system..if you had a black band you were special and it was access all areas, silver it was limited areas and red(I think) and you were virtually unable to leave the lobby.

I had silver which enabled me to wander around and people watch. I'd love to tell you lots of scandalous gossip but there really wasn't any.

Model of the moment Alice Devall was there and ex-casualty star John Denham (or his twin if it wasn't him).

The coveted silver band area was so dark I couldn't make out a celeb even if I wanted to....it was a bit like a night out in Newcastle...lots of drinking and dancing on the table...just the bar bill is a lot steeper.

After a fruitless search for rock stars and royalty I decided to call it a night.

As I made my way out of the club a girl shrieked for me to move over as there was an important celeb on the way.

I expected kate moss or jordan at the very least but no....it was Chris Eubank..grinning from ear to ear and clearly enjoying the attention. what a very short man he is in the flesh!

And with that I side stepped the paps, clutched my goodie bag close, and hailed a cab back to my hotel.

I was exhausted. It's hard work being a fashionista!!!
