MP's in Support For Regions Raptors

By Alan Tilmouth on Feb 13, 09 07:00 AM

Three of the North East's MPs have got together in the Lower Derwent valley to sign the RSPB's pledge promoting the conservation of England's birds of prey.

MPs Dave Anderson (Blaydon), Bill Etherington (North Sunderland), and Sharon Hodgson (Washington), put their names to a pledge recognising the importance of these birds to our natural heritage and stating there should be no place in England's future for the illegal killing of birds of prey.

The bird of prey pledge reads:

Conserving England's birds of prey: Birds of prey are valued as being of great importance to England's natural heritage. They have the power to inspire us, and England's birds of prey populations are recognised as being of international conservation importance.

Many of England's birds of prey are doing better now than for the last 50 years, but there are still areas where populations are capable of further recovery. We wish to see all of England's birds of prey recovering so that everyone can experience these magnificent creatures. There should be no place in England's future for the illegal killing of birds of prey.

The RSPB is asking members of the public who care about our birds of prey to pledge their support for an end to illegal killing at: www.rspb.org.uk/birdsofprey

All we need now is a few of the region's landed gentry to take the pledge and our Hen Harrier's might rest easy. Unfortunately there are still many in our region who value money higher than the life of a bird. What we can do is send out a message to those who continue to persecute our regions birds that there is no place for those attitudes. Go sign the pledge.
