Salma Hayek's wet nursing
Footage released this week of actress Salma Hayek breastfeeding a newborn baby while on a Unicef visit to Africa have sparked debate and unsettled feelings ( look on www.youtube.com for the footage).
"How could she feed another woman's child? How could the baby's mum let her? Weird.."
These are responses born out of a society where we have money to feed ourselves well, if we choose to breastfeed, and money to buy purpose-designed formula to meet our babies needs if we don't, or need to "top up" breastfeeding.
This society doesn't like the messy processes of life - milk in a bottle or carton, chicken packaged in plastic in nice pieces, apples uniform and waxed... thanks to industrial processes we are far-removed from where everything actually comes from.
Kate Garraway the daytime TV presenter recently posed for a picture pretending to suckle a baby calf to illustrate the actual "strangeness" of us drinking cows milk, which we do without thinking - yet get freaked out by a woman sharing her milk with another woman's baby.
Perhaps we think it is odd because breasts are so fetishised in our society? They are certainly far more commonly seen as sexual rather than functional.
I think her actions are commendable.Salma had the previous day in Sierra Leone witnessed a baby die in hospital. Which probably highly influenced her decision to whip out the boobies.
This baby was healthy but hungry, his mother had no milk, Salma who is weaning her own daughter offered to feed the baby and his mother accepted. I see nothing wrong with that, nothing weird.

I am currently studying for the NLN CNE certificaion exam, this blog contents was recommended as a resource and it has been very helpful in preparation for the exam. It is not only an excellent resource for the exam, but also an excellent resource for the novice nurse educator. For those of us in nursing education for a number of years, this blog is excellent at refreshing us and providing new ideas and innovations in nursing.
