Need not greed

By Anna Heywood on Apr 5, 09 10:28 PM

Amongst the school trip reminders and birthday party invitations adorning the fridge, I have three postcards with inspirational dictums stuck on by freebie fridge magnets.

The first one: Jack Kerouac's "Here's to the crazy ones... Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do" has been up for many years now and is what has got me through some low times in campaigning.

The third (I'll get to the second later) is a new addition. I heard it and had to write it down afterwards so it may not be entirely verbatim.
"We have enough on this planet for everyone's need but not for everyone's greed".
These were the words of Newcastle University's Professor Paul Younger when he spoke at the recent Evening Chronicle Environmental Awards.

In my role as an environmental campaigner I hear a lot of people speak on the environment. In fact I heard a lot of people speak at the awards ceremony that day, but Prof Younger was the most inspirational speaker I have heard in a very long time.

Reading Amy Hunt's fantastic interview with the great man himself in Saturday's Journal (Click here to read interview in full) has just made me even more in awe of him; completely humble and oblivious to the persona he has.

Professor Paul Younger names a number of his heroes but doesn't appear to think that he is one himself.
One hero of his is Archbishop Oscar Romero and this brings me to my second inspirational postcard. Archbishop Romero as a hero is something I share with Prof Younger for the postcard I treasure the most, the one I try and live my life by is the one that says:
"Aspire not to have more but to be more" by, yes you've guessed it, Archbishop Romero.

Part of being a hero is also inspiring others to act and whilst I don't expect Prof Younger to accept he has done anything heroic, I should just like to say that my fridge and I think that being able to reach out to others in such an approachable manner is pretty special.
