Training week 13 - getting into the cycle

ALTHOUGH 13 is not a number known for its benevolence, I decided it was the week for drastic action.
Regular readers of my blog (yes, both of you) will known I have so far endured a troubled relationship with my bike.
And when I say troubled relationship, I'm talking about the sort of marriage enjoyed by The Twitts.

You know, Roald Dahl's dysfunctional couple who try repeatedly ingenious methods of trying to kill each other?
And all along you've got a sneaking suspicion they were always a loving pair who would find a way to work it out.
Not in Dahl's world. They end up doing each other in.

That's kinda like me and the bike, except it's not an entirely accurate analogy. Only one half of my relationship is of the murderous bent - I'll give you a clue, it ain't me.
Unfortunately, we have to find a way to work it out if we're going to get through the London Triathlon together in just two short months.
So in the spirit of the best relationship counsellors, I decided we should spend some quality time together at the beach over the bank holiday weekend.
And, I'm astonished to say, it might just have worked. Ok, so we're not sharing a room yet, but we're on good terms and that's got to be something.
Our first proper date was spent on a trip to the seaside on Saturday - a jaunt down to Whitley Bay, to be exact.
I'm trying to get used to biking at a better speed without filling my pants as there really isn't a lot of room in cycling shorts. So I took my courage in my hands, cranked up the gears and started pushing the pedals. I'll let you into a little secret, it was actually good fun.

I got the bike up past 25mph, which is hardly Lance Armstrong standard, but a lot faster than I'm used to.
So, building on my success, I went out again on a glorious Bank Holiday Morning. I got down to Whitley Bay and just kept on going, whizzing up the coast towards Blyth.
And then, glory of glories, I actually overtook another cyclist. Ok, so his bike didn't look too crash hot and I probably had a good 10 years on him, but he was wearing the right gear so he must have been an enthusiast.
Right?
