The Commons two faces

This is a cliche, but what a difference a week makes in politics. In Michael Martin's case, a few weeks have made all the difference.

Party leaders and MPs seemed to be baying for the Commons Speaker's blood. They wanted his head on a pike.

Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg was among those leading the way amid criticism over his handling of the expenses scandal.

But MPs have now been lining up to shower praise on Mr Speaker. Some colleagues have questioned whether this all looks a bit odd to people out in the country.

Might it have been better to allow Mr Martin to make his statement and then that be that?
