The Express...in black and white

By Graeme Whitfield on Jun 18, 09 04:57 PM

There were two interesting stories on race issues in the news this morning.

First off, the Royal College of Midwives made mincemeat of the British National Party over its claims that immigration is fuelling a crisis in NHS maternity care, pointing out that it is only immigrant midwives that keep the service going.

Secondly, Lord Carlile, the independent reviewer of anti-terror laws, said that police were using anti-terror laws to stop and search innocent people to avoid suggestions of racial bias.

Both of these stories are interesting, I'd say, yet only one of them appeared in today's Daily Express. Can any of you guess which one they carried?

That wasn't the claims of the BNP, but rather the claims of Lorna Tinsley, a senior official with the Royal College of Midwives in Wales.

“The increase in the birth rate has put a lot of pressure on the midwifery service in Cardiff and we are delighted a plan has been drawn up to deal with this.

“The 20 extra midwives is a minimum but we are being realistic as to what will be available given there is a general shortage of midwives in England and Wales.

“This is all because the birth rate is going up and has been for the past three years. This is caused by increasing immigration to Wales, the larger number of referrals to UHW for those with maternity problems and the increasing immigration to the UK by those from Eastern Europe, many of whom have greater needs for maternity services because they have left it late in the day to get help and the result is a poorly mum and a poorly baby.”

The BNP merely reported the story, but nice fail none the less.
