Don't buy new stuff
"There is already enough stuff in the world - don't buy new, buy second hand".
That is the message from Rachael Streather in her fantastic booklet '150 second hand shops you can get to on the metro.'
A huge second hand shop fan, Rachael's booklet, lists all the second hand shops under Metro station categories, with their contact details and opening times.
.
She has visited every single one of these stores and for each one Rachael gives us her own, at times, brutally honest assessment and judgement- and those charging too much for second hand items beware - Rachael is not backwards in coming forwards on her opinion of this.
Here are a couple of entries from the booklet:
Cat Protection, Wallsend: This is a lovely little shop, surprisingly well stocked. Most clothes are £1 or less and there are lots of children's clothes all at 50p .... has a changing room
Age Concern, North Shields
Very expensive women's clothes and little else of interest.
At the end of the booklet Rachael states the places she feels are best for Toys, Clothes, books, Linens etc.
My favourite part of the booklet is that this is obviously a work of love.
It has been typed on a typewriter and photocopied, unintentionally giving it a kitsch look.
I met Rachael at her stall where she was selling toys and art work that she has fashioned from items found in the back lanes of Heaton.
She is very passionate about re-use and also those second hand stores that act as if they are high street stores with prices to match.
This booklet really is a little gem of a find and can be purchased directly from Rachael for three pounds.
