Energy Saving Week Diary - Wasteful Behaviour

By Anna Heywood on Oct 21, 09 01:44 PM

Day one of Energy Saving Week looks at wasteful behaviour.

First of all I need to know where I am being wasteful.

I keep looking at the variety of energy monitors available on the Good Energy Shop comparison site and get a bit put off.

None of them do exactly what I want it to do at the right price.

The OWL monitor seems best for my budget but I still have to manually put the figures into an excel spreadsheet to analyse my usage. The Wattson is, sadly, completely out of my price range.

I have been using my trusty pen and paper meter reading method, but sometimes I do forget.
I decide to preserve with my old fashioned way for the meantime but note that Ethicalsuperstore.com, based in the Team Valley, have knocked £5 off the price of the OWL, making it £29.95. I shall add it to my birthday present list (which is not too far away).

Also on my birthday list is one of those clever little appliance meter plugs which tell how much in cost and energy your appliance is using. This is priced at £14. 95

A friend of mine got one recently and told me it is addictive; the whole family have been plugging appliances in to see how much energy they use and she was shocked at how much her kettle used every time she boiled it.

Energy Wasting Facts
The average standard kettle in the UK is used to boil water seven times per day with the average Brit getting through 4.3 cups of tea per day.

According to the Department for Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) a family could run a TV set for 26 hours or light a house for a day on the electricity wasted by boiling more water than they need for one week.

The Department of Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) have calculated that if everyone in the UK only boiled the water they need rather than filling the kettle the UK would save 1.27 Billion kWh of electricity (and hundreds of millions of pounds).
