No 10 petition for Windows and Boiler scrappage scheme

By Anna Heywood on Oct 26, 09 10:38 PM

I was not a huge fan of the car scrappage scheme, only for the reason that I objected to it being spun as a green scheme when in fact it was a way of propping up the car industry.

If that's what the Government want to do then fine, but at least have the decency to be honest about it.

Two areas where I think that the scrappage scheme would be far better directed at (if the environment is truly paramount) are retro-fitting housing stock with energy efficient boilers and windows.

I had been thinking about this, largely because I have been looking at the grants available to help householders fit solar panelling and other micro-generation features to their homes, and it struck me that to get the grant, you still needed your own substantial amount of outlay.

Both the window and boiler industry are one step ahead of me and have started No 10 petitions calling for their own scrappage schemes.

The Window Scrappage Scheme created by the Glass & Glazing Federation (GGF) has reached over 1,000 signatures since its launch in September 2009.

The GGF has petitioned the government to introduce a scrappage scheme, whereby householders are encouraged to scrap their old poorly insulated windows in return for a £1,000 grant towards the installation of new, professionally installed, energy efficient ones.

Consumers would save £1,000 and enjoy a facelift to their homes, along with lower fuel bills and more energy efficient homes. And the government would benefit from reduced emissions from the existing housing stock, helping it to meet the necessary greenhouse gas emissions targets.

Plumbers are also calling on Government to introduce a scrappage scheme for old boilers to encourage their replacement with newer, more efficient models.

The scheme would mirror the car scrappage scheme, which offers those buying new, fuel efficient vehicles the option of trading in their older models for £2,000, provided they have were made more than ten years ago.

A petition to support the boiler scrappage scheme has been set up on the Number 10 website and can be found at http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/boilerscrappage.

Excellent move. Why should car owners get the benefit of energy savings whilst we pensioners receive a pathetic amount to offset the ever increasing oil bills.

You would have heard about the boiler scrappage scheme and I also know, just like me you will be pretty happy about it. Like me you probably wont qualify for it but are happy about the amount of carbon emissions the scheme will reduce (140,000 tonnes a year). I have just heard that Scottish and Southern energy are matching the governments scheme, I don't know if its true but what I read on its website says it will give anyone a £400 allowance towards a new grade A boiler, no matter where you stay and know matter how old your boiler is. I also think you can still claim the governments allowance on top of that, so if you have a grade G boiler & live in England then you can get £800 of your new one. Pretty good I have to say but the true winner is our planet. You can find out more information @ boiler scrappage uk.

Yes Gavin £800 is indeed a good saving. I heard that British Gas is matching the £400 and giving homecare 200 for a year, which saves you about another £250. Also it appears that the scheme is very popular I think I heard that over 50,000 people have applied already and the Energy Savings Trust is about 4 weeks behind. This is great news for the environment and also for all those peoples pockets. They should save a bundle on their heating bills.

I have heard that Boiler Scrappage Scheme uk is for families and homeowners to access up-to-date news, grant information and money saving offers on the UK's first ever boiler trade-in initiative.
I am interested to know more about it.

The above thought is smart and doesn’t require any further addition. It’s perfect thought from my side.

Its a shame that most of my customers wernt even aware of the boiler sceme. Its a good thing we had some marketing materials to help us explain the situation to customers that needed a new boiler installation.
