Pushed too far?

By Karen Overbury on Nov 23, 09 02:35 PM

IT'S important to get on with your neighbours. When they do something you don't like, perhaps hosting a noisy party or leaving their car where it's inconvenient to you, sometimes it's best to turn a blind eye - just as they probably do to you!

But there comes a point when even the most mild-mannered, patient and understanding neighbour will feel they've been pushed too far.

A few days ago, I was sent a link to a website showing what some people have done to the outside of their homes.

Now, I'm a firm believer in making a home individual and truly your own, But isn't painting the properties completely blue and bright purple pushing individualism just a little too far?

Some of the properties were actually impressive works of art - but how would you feel if you came back from work one night and found that the house next door had been repainted white with giant black blotches as a attribute to the book and film "101 Dalmations"?

Or perhaps it was a bright orange and black tiger-skin print or leopard skin design.

A batch of flashing neon signs at Christmas might seem to be a touch too much, but the festive season is fairly short-term.

However, if the chap in the other half of your semi goes to the trouble and expense of painting the property bright pink and covering it in giant yellow dots, he's probably thinking at least medium term. And if the house has become a black and white Toon Army tribute property, he's definitely thinking long term!

As I've stressed before, my neighbours are wonderful and we have no problems - at least none I am aware of. And I'm pretty certain they're not going to paint their home with a Yellow Brick Road mural or put a giant fish tank round the property.

What about yours?
