So, as predicted, Denis Murphy adds his name to the long list of MPs saying goodbye to the region.
All eyes now turn to Tyneside, and speculation of an incredible comeback.

Yes, rumour reaches this regional affairs correspondent that former mayor John Harrison may be looking to see if any seats are going spare.

Filed under S for "So good we hope it's true", Mr Harrison will know there are plenty of seats going spare North of the river, with constant whispers that there may soon be more coming.

Which raises the wonderful, albeit unlikely, prospect that the man who lost his job to new Tory mayor Linda Arkley could one day find he has to work with her as an MP.

And that's exactly the sort of self-fulfilling prophecy a political reporter can really get to like.

Fantasy politics....not a chance that Harrison will get a seat. And unless Stephen Byers fancies making way for him, then Linda Arkley would not have to work with Harrison as an MP anyway.
