So long David Clelland then. Maybe he didn't achieve the same obvious power and fame as some North MPs, but he played an important role in bringing the region's transport concerns to Whitehall.

And who else could be following the early retirement bandwagon? Look South keen regional affairs fans, look South.

For what it's worth, my money is on Stuart Bell in "the boro" and Dari Taylor in Stockton both stepping down. Question that keeps on getting asked behind the scenes is whether or nor Middlesbrough mayor and former cop Ray Mallon would want a go at the seat.
