Newcastle Easily See Off Plymouth to Reach Fourth Round
This was as routine a win as you'll see this season, and for many following this. There were two teams here that didn't really want to be there, but they just didn't want to be there more than we did.
We outclassed Plymouth from minute one, and gulf between the two teams was there for all to see. Was great to see Lovenkrands get a hattrick as he put his name forward to fill the role Beckford may or may not take. One has to wonder if Beckford is any better than we've got. None of our strikers are Premiership class. Carroll has potential but he needs to score more goals. It's all well and good putting yourself about, but at the end of the day a strikers role is to score goals and that's something that has been missing recently. We lack the killer instinct.
You might wonder why I'm whinging when we've just won 3-0 and remain top of the league, but the only way we are going to stay there is if we learn to kill teams off. We couldn't score past Derby, but Scunthorpe go and put 4 past them. I've always been a fan of the big man/little man partnership with the little man making the runs from the big man's knock down. Should we persevere with Carroll or Shola alongside Lovenkrands?
So a comfortable win means ANOTHER away cup tie with our opponents on Monday. I'd take three points ahead of a place in round 5.
