Labour's electric dreams
Could Labour's decision to back electric cars with our hard cash be a "game changer" in terms of political support?
In the North East, car giant Nissan has annouced it will start production of its all-electric Leaf car at its Sunderland plant from 2013. It will secure thousands of jobs and put the region firmly on the map of what looks like it will be the car industry of the future.
Gordon Brown will be able to declare that it is his Government that brought this good news to the North East, making good his promise to make the region a world leader in new green industries.
On top of that, development agency One North East has been key in helping sway Nissan with its plans for a regional network of charging points. Tories arguing against the RDA will have an even more difficult case.
Nissan is investing more than ã200m, but that is backed up by the Government to the tune of ã20m in direct aid and a financial package from the European Investment Bank - which is funded by taxpayers.
All of this is good news for Labour with only a few weeks to go before the general election.
