Media Tart Strikes Again

By Brenda Boyd on Apr 30, 10 11:58 AM

A couple of years ago Mrs Quilt christened me the Media Tart partly because I do this blog but mostly because I send out press releases about Morris events and, even though I put other people's names on as well, I end up getting interviewed or quoted (see page 15 of last Monday's Journal about dancing for St George outside the Baltic).
I've just been interviewed by BBC Radio Newcastle about Dancing on Town Moor at Dawn on May Day.
They rang me (I haven't issued a press release so I must be in someone's contacts book) "Is that Brenda Boyd? Are you still involved in dancing on the Moor on MayDay?"
It's only a short piece probably being broadcast tomorrow, after we've danced.
Strangely enough the woman didn't want to get up and do a piece from the Moor.
kingsmendawn.jpgAnyway 4.30am tomorrow morning will see members of Tyne Bridge Morris, the Newcastle Kingsmen and possible some others, gathering on the footbridge from Claremont Road over the Central Motorway. We will process to the centre of the Moor and take turns dancing until the sun rises at 5.27.
You're welcome to join us.

Alan Johnson for PM?

By William Green on Apr 28, 10 12:17 PM

Home Secretary Alan Johnson has just left the door open to becoming Prime Minister of a coalition Government.

Here was my question to him: "There has been lots of speculation about what happens about the election, do you rule out categorically that Gordon Brown would go and you would become Prime Minister of a coalition Government, do you rule that out now."

But he didn't in his response or voters "inviting" the Lib Dems to join Government.

"I rule out anything that is to do with predictions for what happens on May 7. I think all of focus now is on May 6.

David Cameron is facing a challenge on his drug policy from one of his own would-be candidates.

David Skelton, Tory candidate in North Durham, used an online blog to attack Gordon Brown's decision to reclassify cannabis from a class C to a class B drug last year as "utterly illiberal".

That's despite Mr Cameron demanding such a move.

Blimey, Ken Clarke doing his free spirit thing again - he backed Labour on nationalising Northern Rock. Against Tory policy at the time.

UPDATE Labour's Chancellor Alistair Darling said: "Today, Ken Clarke became the first senior Tory to admit they got their judgement on the financial crisis wrong.

We won a Cup you know

By Stephen Farrell on Apr 26, 10 12:12 PM

There were over 52,000 at SJP on Saturday to witness the presentation of the Championship trophy, and I reckon we could have sold another 52,000 such was the demand to get a ticket that day. What an enjoyable day it was too.

Labour seems to be preparing for a post-election world - that is a hung Parliament and how it could remain in power.

Senior party figures still talk the talk, insisting they are having a good campaign. But there seems to be an underlying recognition that we are heading for a hung Parliament. And the calculations are literally already underway.

My interview with Health Secretary Andy Burnham this morning is particularly interesting in this respect - especially in terms of Labour saying it has the right to govern if it gets the lowest share of the vote but the most seats.

That is clear that the Lib Dems should fall into line, while talk of removing Gordon Brown to secure a coalition is derided by Mr Burnham.

snake-massage-3.jpg
As a massage therapist, clients often tell me about treatments they've had in far-flung corners of the world. Most sound completely heavenly, like four-handed Pacific massage in a luxurious tree-house spa nestled in one of Thailand's islands.

Usually, hearing about such amazing experiences leaves me feeling unable to deliver on quite the same level, and it can kind of put a downer on the treatment you're doing in a fairly standard room, with no beach in the background, parrots padding about and that sort of thing. (Of course, this sense is amplified when you're crammed into a tiny, scruffy dressing room at some down-at-heel music venue, heavy metal thumping in the background.)

I'VE watched the video of Friday night's win over Nathan King and I can't believe how much criticism I've had for it.

I'm not trying to kid anyone, it wasn't a perfect performance, but I'm very positive about the way it went.

Labour's rogue state

By William Green on Apr 23, 10 03:31 PM

Whoops. Labour's Welsh Secretary Peter Hain has proved that politicians can be all too human. He seems to have got his rogue states mixed up when talking about the need for an independent nuclear deterrent. North Korea has been labelled a rogue state not South Korea.

Talking about his support for replacing Trident, he said: "Nobody is really seriously disputing that amongst the three leaders party leaders.

"Because otherwise with Iran acquiring a nuclear capability, with South Korea, which is a rogue state, having it, with terrorists possibly being able to get access to a nuclear bomb we need have to a nuclear capability.

Lab: Lib Dems still on a roll

By William Green on Apr 23, 10 11:48 AM

Could this be a case of Labour love-bombing the Lib Dems again? Could it be a case of realism and jockeying for position in any coalition Government.

Well, what is clear is that Welsh Secretary Peter Hain is wily and has been a long-serving politician. His words will have been chosen carefully, Do they raise the possibility of Labour continuing in power, but in coalition with the Lib Dems and with a new Labour leader?

In a post-leaders debate interview with me this morning, he said: "It doesn't look as if the surge that Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats suddenly got a week ago has burst.

"It looks as if they are pretty well holding their own and I think that means that the election is really wide open.
