Labour's Opposition Troubles

By William Green on Jul 27, 10 06:49 PM

It might seem like a strange headline for a blog. But let me explain. It is not just the fact that Labour, like any political party, doesn't like being out of power.

It is also about the fact that there is an awful lot of skeletons in the cupboards and ghosts ready to jump out at Labour.

The next generation of Labour figures is often talked about, for example the leadership contenders. But let's not forget, they have been at the heart of the Labour Government for years. They may not have been MPs, but they were there.

And they have all been Cabinet ministers, barring Diane Abbott. Many of the controversial decisions of Labour, they were there. Who voted for the Iraq War - athough the same could be said of the Tories for example?

£37.8m. That is the price of making 391 people redundant from the old Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).

Labour leadership candidate Ed Balls was Secretary of State at the Whitehall department from June 2007 until May 2010.

The figures show that at least someone, certainly under five, got a total redundancy package of between £450,000 and £500,000.

The answer to the above question is a lot. In fact an eye-watering amount. To coin a phrase, I'm sure they're worth it.

But nearly £46m for 608 people over three years, is a heck of a lot. That is what a freedom of information request to the Department for Transport has revealed.

A small number - the figure is given as less than five - received a total package of between £400,000 and £450,000.

Now what transport scheme could you get for nearly £46m...

North East abolished

By William Green on Jul 22, 10 09:29 PM

Does the North East still exist? In fact what about the West Midlands or any other "region" to that matter?

It may seem like an odd question to pose, but the unions say the scrapping of regional quangos by the coalition Government amounts to as much. The regional development agency gone, the regional Government office gone, regional strategies, gone.

Of course, we all live in different "regions" but robust Communities Secretary Eric Pickles does not hide his dislike of all things regional - hence them being consigned to the bin. Now he might argue that regional identity is not about the structures, but of course they can reflect and enhance that regional identity,

I've got tunnel vision

By Tony Jeffries on Jul 20, 10 01:57 PM

I'VE got plenty to look forward to at the moment because this time next week I'll be on holiday with my girlfriend. But right now all I can think about is my fight against Michael Banbula at Rainton Meadows on Friday.

To be honest, the weeks before a fight aren't that exciting really - it's all hard work and horrible ice baths - but I can't look forward to my holiday yet. It's mad because people are always asking me what I want to achieve in my career but I can't think about anything after this fight until I've got it out of the way.

It might sound boring but it's always one fight at a time for me and I can't get this next fight out of my head at the moment.

Grow Your Own- Eyelashes!

By Anna Rebecca Mason on Jul 18, 10 10:50 PM

The Boots website crashed this morning as thousands of women attempted to get hold of a bottle of RapidLash's Eyelash Enhancing Serum. The serum, which costs 39.99, claims to boost lash growth by 50% over the course of eight weeks, was being sold a bottle a minute on Saturday.

Such is the excitement, that sales may even beat those of No.7 Protect & Perfect. Remember women queuing through the night to get their hands on the 'magic' anti-ageing serum?

But before you rush out and slap down your 39.99, hang on a minute.

ST SWITHIN'S DAY DANCE OUT

By Brenda Boyd on Jul 14, 10 03:47 PM

Thumbnail image for cumberland sign.jpgTomorrow evening (15th July)
Tyne Bridge Morris,
Hexham Morrismen,
Hexhamshire Lasses
and the Newcastle Kingsmen will be dancing outside the Cumberland Arms, Byker.

We've done this on a Thursday evening in July for the past few years. We normally practice on a Thursday night so it's simple to arrange. It's also nice to get out and perform with other dancers for the evening and to be sociable. The first one co-incided with Bastille Day, which was fun. The cognoscenti amongst you will realise that tomorrow is St Swithin's Day. If we bring on the rain we may be stuck with it for 40 days. So let's hope for fine weather.

Hard Heel Help

By Anna Rebecca Mason on Jul 12, 10 10:20 AM

Hard skin on your feet can be a real pain. It's a bit like having an unfortunate Facebook pest that just won't go away, no matter how hard you try to get rid: persistent, always coming back and definitely not pretty.

I've tried all kinds of things on mine. In my naive teenage years I thought that a mere pumice stone would do the trick (ha!). Then I progressed to foot files, in all shapes and sizes, in a bid to achieve baby soft feet. I learned that just because a file comes in the shape of a foot, doesn't mean it's going to be any better than the last oval shaped one.

The bottom line is, none of this really works.

Sledging in the sun

By Tony Jeffries on Jul 10, 10 02:50 PM

I'VE been doing some mad training the last couple of weeks, but anyone who's spotted me out and about with my sledge in the summer sun doesn't need to worry - it's all about preparing for my next fight against Michael Banbula on July 23.

It will be another step-up for me because it's the first time I'll have ever had an eight-round bout.

I've never been past six before but the work I've been putting in this week should mean I'm ready for whatever happens at Rainton Meadows Arena.

Everyone keeps telling me how beautiful it is to watch World Cup finalists Spain but I just can't agree. As pretty as their slick, passing football is I can't help but be absolutely terrified by it.

On Wednesday they were like one of those giant Boa Constrictors, slowly squeezing the life out of a hitherto vibrant Germany in the first half before devouring them with a wonderful, daring second half effort.

I must admit, I've been irked by the hero worship of the Spanish at this tournament. I never had a problem with a team who are quite clearly the international side of their generation, but did we really need to rush to canonise them after beating Honduras, a dreadful Portugal and an obdurate Paraguay?
