My girlfriend the heroine
MY girlfriend, Sarah, has seen me box loads of times, but I'd never seen her at work until we went to the cinema this week - and I was really impressed!
Sarah is a nurse at Sunderland's A&E department, and she's studying so she can work in the Los Angeles hospitals while we're out here.
But she got a bit of unexpected practice when we went to watch Russell Brand's latest film, Arthur, this week, in Downtown LA.
We got our tickets, our drinks and our popcorn, and we were just walking up to our screen for the film when we saw two lads dragging someone out of one of the doors of another. There was a women with them, and she was in a bit of a state shouting, "Call 911! Call 911!"
Some of the staff called 911 and Sarah gave me the popcorn. Calm as anything she went over and saved the day.
She told the lads she was a nurse and managed to get their mate right put him in the recovery position until the paramedics came, and by then the lad had come round. Sarah thinks he must have had a fit when he watched the film and was unconscious. It seemed everyone - his mates, and the staff at the cinema - panicked when that happened.
It was the first time I'd ever seen Sarah in action and it was good to see how well she handled it.
I was panicking as well, thinking he was going to die, but she was calm as anything.
I knew already, of course, but it was just another reminder of what great work nurses do. As sportsmen we often get treated like heroes, but people like Sarah and all the other nurses and medical staff around the world are the true heroes.
