Brought Back Down to Earth

By Stephen Farrell on Dec 5, 11 12:40 PM

We certainly got the rub of the green last weekend against the Manchester Redsox - but karma well and truly bit us on the backside this weekend when we played Chelsea.

We went into this game with not so much arrogance, but we felt we could get something here given how well we've been playing and how Chelsea have struggled for any kind of consistency. Our first attack just before the 5 minute mark saw Ba bundled over by the clumsy 'poor Coloccini' with only the Chelsea keeper in Demba's way of the goal. Straight red card surely? Nope - just a yellow. I could maybe understand if the ref hadn't seen anything, but to actually blow for the foul and then just book him smacks of a referee who doesn't understand the laws of the game. Had Luiz been sent off, it may have been a different game, alas, it was not to be.

Sturridge, their best player by a country mile, caused allsorts of problems down our left hand side and the void left by Jonas was there for all to see with Raylor getting caught out more times than I can remember. Krul kept everything out however, including a smart penalty save from "Lamps" which instilled further belief that we could get something. An injury to Captain Colo soon put that to bed though when he limped off with a knock, and not long after Chelski scored the opener with some poor positioning from Perch. To be fair to the lad, I thought he did well for the most part - and there will be occasions when you are out jumped by Drogba. Otherwise, he worked well alongside Saylor, until another injury blow hit us. It's looking like he's going to be out for the season now which is a huge, huge blow given that he is in the form of his life. Not that Capello would have noticed - his response to talk of Saylor getting in the squad was that "we have enough midfielders". This is the man responsible for picking the best English talent for crying out loud. I'm fairly sure he uses The Sun's player ratings for this, which will mean we will forever be stuck with Scott Parker pirouetting in the middle of the park and passing it back to Phil Jones.

Before the Saylor sucker punch though, we were causing the Chelski back line all kinds of problems with the woodwork taking a battering - one from a howitzer from Shola which was so unlucky not to be two inches lower. The final two goals put a really flattering slant on the game as we were effectively down to ten men after the departure of our rock at the back.

There are some positives to take from this believe it or not. We did make Chelsea work for their win with a combination of top class goalkeeping and potent attack play. We can take this into the Norwich and Swansea games with the belief we can pick something up. That said, the injuries to our rocks in the middle are cause for concern, and the thought of Perch and Simpson going up against two big lads at Carrow Road fills me with dread. That said, the next few games do allow us the opportunity to go out there and pick up some more points before the Christmas period and the manic midseason transfer window.

Hang on to your hats.
