Cafes on a wintry afternoon vs Inexplicable power cuts

GOOD THING: Cafes on a wintry afternoon

Having spent the past few weekends either hunting for flats or cleaning up our own, we decided to do something nice this weekend. Of course, on Saturday, when the weather was lovely, we ended up doing housework and then spending two hours in the dark of the cinema, only to discover that on Sunday, the day we’d set aside for a day-trip, the weather was miserable.

I’ve just come back to work following a week’s holiday, and although I did manage to achieve some useful things, I also rediscovered my love of mindless ‘busywork’, as Americans term it.

It was only when a colleague told me about an unfortunate orange squash-related accident that killed her iPod, that I began to realise how devastated I would be if it happened to me. The loss of the iPod, not the orange squash accident.

GOOD THING: Pets Corner

When I was four I was given a rabbit that I named Wiggles, who was mean-tempered and who I consequently ignored much of the time. Twenty-something years later I still feel bad for neglecting him, even though he kicked like a mule and was the size of a small dog.

The return of Michael Palin vs Cinema disturbances

GOOD THING: The return of Michael Palin

In a late-summer slump of unfunny sitcoms and dreary documentaries, my excitement about a new Michael Palin travel series seems entirely justified. I think of Michael Palin as my TV dad – no disrespect to my own dad, but he hasn’t travelled the world and written lovely books to go with it.

GOOD THING: Wildlife at the Civic Centre

I guess they've always been there, but it’s only since I started being able to walk to work at the beginning of this year that I noticed the abundance of wildlife thriving in the middle of the city. Well, ‘abundance’ might be going a bit far, but lots of rabbits and ducks anyway.

So the Metro system is going to get a £50 million overhaul, including £14.3 million to be spent on new ticket machines. Well, that at least nearly equals the amount of money I’ve had to spend just to get change for the machines over the past 6 years of my working life.

The Balance of Life - one Good Thing, one Bad Thing, the chance to both extol and berate in one blog. Random, unrelated, obscure - all of the these words will probably apply at one time or another. First up, student holidays and the sad goodbye to that crime-fighting stalwart, Nick Ross...

Disclaimer: I’m a nice person, really. And in the end, none of this really matters.
