Herbie's back
Crunchy chord maestro and jazz grandad Herbie Hancock is back in Gateshead in a couple of weeks time and I'm gearing up for a bit of keytar action.
My grave fear is that the strap-on piano, and the possibility of an unbridled funkathon its presence teases you with, might not materialise.
I suspect I'm not alone in having seen Hancock at the City Hall in 2003 and, more recently, at The Sage - two very different gigs indeed.
One was so thoughtful everyone left with the same furrowed brow and the other so funky everyone left with the same neck brace.
So what do we expect this time around? And which Hancock would we have back?
I'm a sucker, as you can probably tell, for the Headhunters period but I, like many amateur players, fell in love with jazz when I first listened to Canteloupe Island, Speak Like a Child and Maiden Voyage.
His image suffered a bit when you couldn't get a coffee at Starbucks without being offered a one of his CDs. And a lot of my musician friends feel the need to blame him when they hear Chameleon covered soullessly for the 1,000,000th time.
But he's still Herbie Hancock - my increasingly wrinkly hero - so I'll be there, cappucino in hand, to show my support. Anyone care to join me?
