The Mighty Boosh, Metro Radio Arena

By Reviews on Nov 30, 08 10:08 PM

A rapping gorilla, a crack addict fox and futuristic sailors. Not your
average night out in Newcastle.

But this is no ordinary show as we journey through time and space to the
world of the Mighty Boosh.

The brainchild of Noel Fielding and Julian Barrett, the BBC 3 show has a
huge cult following - reflected here in the scores of fans dressed as Boosh
characters.

The best part of the TV show, apart from the weird and wonderful
characters, is the music.

This dominates the live show, which is more like a comedy musical than a
version of the TV series.

It opens with Barrett and Fielding, who is dressed in a mirror ball sailor
outfit, scaling the impressive set singing Future Sailors - an instant
crowd pleaser.

Fielding's outfits get more outrageous while his black mane grows until it
would put the Amy Winehouse beehive to shame.
The rest of the first half is a parade of Boosh characters doing their own
sketches while interacting with the show's heroes.

American gigolo Bob Fossil gets us up for a dance routine that would put
any embarrassing dad's disco moves to shame.

Crowd favourites Naboo the enigma and Bollo the talking gorilla are warmly
received. The duo's x-rated rap definitely would not have made the TV
series.

The second act is mainly a parade of new characters, including Sunflash, an
electro warrior from the planet Camden.
But this segment struggles as the new characters do not get the same
high-fuelled reaction.

With no real storyline, the show becomes a glam rock musical with the
Boosh's own band, the Ungrateful Dead.

The crowd play along and by the end of the show are screaming for more.
Although the show flags in some parts, the adoration of the crowd lets the
pair get away with it.
