What's that coming over the hill, is it an oboe?

By Paul Loraine on Nov 6, 08 12:22 PM

The line-up for next year's Gateshead International Jazz festival landed in my inbox the other day.

It's not happening for a while yet, I know, but we don't get that much good jazz up here so we have to anticipate these things more eagerly than they do down south.

In terms of big names, I think last year's offering was arguably stronger but there's still plenty to look forward to.

For me, the stand-out gig is likely to be the Josh Redman Trio. His playing on Momentum - the groove-based album he recorded with Sam Yahel, Brian Blade, Jeff Ballard and others - makes me wish I was a saxophonist.

Given the acoustic swing-feel of his release Back East last year, I think it's unlikely we're going to hear his funk chops, a realisation that makes me want to cry. I do like his other stuff but he's got an energy and drive in his funk solos that's almost unmatched.

Courtney Pine is likely to be a big attraction too. Last time I saw him was down south and he was wearing a long white robe playing the sax with no hands, his arms extended to his sides. Make your own minds up about that one.

While this is not entirely on a musical matter, the headline of your blog reminded me of an incident at Headingley during the Test Match this summer.
Upon seeing a large red crustacean being thrown up the Western Terrace, the assembled cricket spectating masses started chanting: "What's that coming over the hill, is it a lobster?".
And, despite them being more than a little merry, they were quite correct.

Great to see a member of the younger generation taking an interest in jazz.

I saw a busker playing jazz oboe near the Monument today. It was pants...

PJ, I suggest you listen to Dick Hafer on I.X. Love for some classiz jazz oboe - it's on Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus. Like Paul when he listens to the Josh Redman Trio, it makes me want to throw down my trumpet and hit the reeds.
