GP's Song of the Day: Abba
Given that Abba are generally considered to be a frothy pop band par excellence, Knowing Me Knowing You is a remarkably sad song.
Not even the memory of Alan Partridge shouting "Aha!" can stop Knowing Me Knowing You being utterly heartbreaking.
I've always assumed that it was about the break-ups in the Abba marriages, but apparently it pre-dated both divorces. Either way, the lyrics ("No more carefree laughter/Silence ever after/Walking through an empty house, tears in my eyes/Here is where the story ends, this is goodbye") and the chorus make it one of the greatest break-up songs ever written.
(A few years ago I went on holiday to Stockholm and ended up on a boat trip through the archipelago in the bay off the city. Me and Mrs GP ended up on an island that had lots of nice walks but we were particular excited to pass Viggsö, the island where Benny and Bjorn had a summer house and wrote many of Abba's greatest hits.)
