Rock n Roll Royalty
Like the dutiful daughter that I am, on Sunday I took my mum to see Young Victoria. I didn't expect a huge amount; though the combination of big dresses, country houses and the royal family is meant to appeal to us girlies, usually it really doesn't work for me.
But (and I can hardly believe I am writing this) I actually thought it was pretty good.
Though I suspect that it's not wholly historically accurate, I thought it was refreshing to see a slightly stroppy, headstrong, determined young girl as the lead character in a film. Emily Blunt did a fabulous job with what could have been an incredibly two-dimensional role and even the usually sappy Rupert Friend imbued Prince Albert with a certain amount of chutzpah. I even believed they were really in love.
So I kind of hope that it's not just middle England (sorry mam) who go and see this film because, bizarrely, Young Victoria is so much more enlightened than the recent teen favourite Twilight. Just because it's about vampires doesn't mean its subversive, ladies, and just because it's about a Queen doesn't mean it's boring. Mums- take your daughters, Daughters -take your mums.
And, the moral of this story? Don't judge a film by its trailer
