Basement Jaxx and Master Shortie impress Ramsay Cudlipp

The dancing gorillas topped it off.

As Basement Jaxx launched into a storming version of Where's Your Head At? during the finale at their O2 Academy gig on Monday, dancers in monkey suits bounded onto the stage and sent the crowd into fever pitch.

It was a high-octane performance from the masters of house music and the packed arena hummed with the heavy basslines from well-known hits like Bingo Bango and Oh My Gosh.

Before they appeared on stage, a lengthy intro to Good Luck boomed out from the speakers, accompanied by hypnotic graphics on a huge screen. When the duo behind one of the UK's most successful house acts - Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe - finally appeared, they did not disappoint.

It was a fast, frenetic opening and set the tone for a top show.

The intimate room suited the occasion with everyone close enough to appreciate the many costume changes by the trio of female singers and the lively stage presence of more than ten people at times.

Basement Jaxx might be a duo but every live show feeds off the energy provided by their accompanying musicians, singers and dancers.

An acoustic rendition of Romeo was well received but a few people seemed disappointed it did not develop into the more familiar album version.

Crowd-pleaser Jump n' Shout and an interesting take on Three Times a Lady were served up as everyone enjoyed a group who know their material and always deliver what their fans crave.

When the gorillas came out for Where's Your Head At? the only complaint was it was not the last track of the night. As they re-appeared for an encore, they struggled to reach the same intensity and it made for a slight anticlimax.

The venue had been warmed up by Master Shortie who opened with a surprising but worthy twist on Adam and the Ants' Prince Charming. Shortie's best-known track - Dance Like a White Boy - also went down well, and a short burst of Nirvana classic Smells Like Teen Spirit got everyone jumping before the main event.

I would just love to see them playing live. Their performances are just breath taking. I'm also looking forward to hearing Intex filter a play later this month. They too have some good beats although they are not so well known.
