Michael Jackson: some thoughts
Have just finished putting up the news of Michael Jackson's death on this here Culture page of The Journal's website.
While I've been at it, the BBC have been over to Glastonbury to ask one of White Lies what he thinks (commendably sober) and Sky have treated us to a blast of Don't Stop Till You Get Enough (fair dos).
But the finest piece of commentary came from a stalwart DJ, the Professor of Pop.
The redoubtable Paul Gambaccini declared that Jacko, when you met him, was taller than you'd expect him to be.
And that, amid the nonsense and speculation about things we could possibly never know, is possibly the most insightful thing we'll hear over the next few days.
Uri Geller reporting that Jackson told him he had regular operations on his face because he didn't want to look like his father, is possibly the saddest.
Despite the surprise at his early death, it is, in a way, not as shocking as many things about his life.
The best way to remember him? The wonderfully building, bewitching bars of I Want You Back, one of the finest introductions to a song you're ever likely to hear.
