I know, I'm ever so overdue with the revelation that this is a work of brilliance. It's been almost as long since I managed to write something in here. Still, one shouldn't be stubborn and I'm not too proud to make a shock return after an overlong dramatic pause, certainly not when I've just discovered this lot.
Registering high in the year-end best of polls beloved of the music mags, (Mojo had it at 12, Uncut at 21), this album might fall into the rather unsatisfactory Americana genre but I tell you this only by way of a clue. It's on the Bella Union label, home of the Fleet Foxes, but so what? This defies categorisation, it's too big, too flexible, too various within its 12 songs and 42 minutes.
The pair of all-out raucous rockers first: The Horizon is A Beltway ("the skyline's on fire") and Home I'll Never Be (Jack Kerouac done by Tom Waits); both furious statements of capability on a predominantly quiet LP.
And it's the quiet ones you've got to watch. Listen to the sublime Charlie Darwin, or To Ohio, with its tales of pines, railway lines and lost love.
Apparently recorded in a deserted tourist resort, you can hear space, the room to invent.
(Don't) Tremble, a song gentle enough to soothe even my cat, contains lovely rhymes like: "If your pilot light should die/ Do not quake and do not bark/ You will find the spark."
I think this, occasionally, recalls Gomez in their prime, with that breathtaking capacity to shift from one vocal, musical and lyrical style to another in a flash. Songs dredged up fully formed from a swamp one minute, the gentlest lullaby the next. But mostly, The Low Anthem have produced an album so accomplished that it couldn't properly be compared to anyone else.
To The Ghosts Who Write History Books could have been written by prime Dylan. I can think of no higher compliment. OMGCD and To Ohio (Reprise) are as fine an album-ending couple of tracks as you'll have heard for a while.
Maybe this is all old news to you. If not, I'd get hold of a copy, and sharp.

They were in Cluny 2 in November and they were breathtaking. All of the Low Anthem use old, 'found and forgotten' instruments as well as unusual stuff which helps their sound be different too!
The live harmonies made you shiver of warmth...
Believe they are on worldtour, one of the few concerts I'd say I would very happy go again the next day!
I'm not sure how I managed to miss them (the tour - and the record, until now) but I'm certainly disappointed I did. I notice the latest gigs don't come anywhere near the North East. Shame.
I suppose I'll have to make do with the cd, which I'm unable to remove from my player at the moment.
