Wild Beasts, The Cluny, Newcastle
Popped down to The Cluny on Friday night, to see Cumbria's finest, WIld Beasts. Here's my review...
Here was some kind of magnificence.
Towards the end of this show, the Wild Beasts announce they're from a "little town down the road".
And they are, for all of their strange and splendidly different ways, a band that could only really come from Kendal.
At first, marvelling at the lyrical creativity on show, you think how unlikely that they come from somewhere as straightforward as Cumbria. But, you think again and it's quite obvious, it's the place that begot this lot.
Lyrics that creep through a small town's darkly exotic underbelly, their writers inhabit characters and imagine bovver boot ballets in a way that was last done so effectively by Morrissey (so that's where the silly Smiths comparisons have come from).
One minute they are the boys who'll drape girls in jewels, the next they're engaging rivals in a "fisticuffing waltz". Often they're "cold and cagey kids rattling around the town". They are a wonderful Freudian slip, a booty call.
It starts with stars on a black stage, the night sky of a lulled and dumbfound town. The Fun Powder Plot is beautiful and precise, with its chrome clanging and donkey jaw diction. It is made in Cumbria, a moment of modern, youthful - sometimes exuberant, sometimes joyless - life.
This Is Our Lot is clean, crisp and has a huge sound, full of young reprobates as it is.
Then All the King's Men, introduced with a scream of "Watch me", pits gravel tones against falsetto (a bewitching combination throughout), and you think ahead, imagining a day this lot make it big and play this again and the crowd go wild. Or maybe not, I suspect they're too strange, too creative to ever go that far.
These glottal stop and plump heart a thumping lyrics hint at that, as does the Two Dancers suite. Dramatic and resounding, "the wanderer, the squander" - sounds as fun to play as it must have been to write. It's some achievement for a band so young.
Then We Still Got The Taste Dancin' On Our Tongues. Slightly laboured and slower than on record, more angry and gothic, but exciting and firing us into a world of moonshine and cheap tricks. Again, maybe this is why The Smiths crop up, perhaps for the first time in 20 years we have a band with a proper ability to inhabit another world, another mind, to present a song from another perspective.
The Devil's Crayon from the first album is impressive while the astounding and alliterative Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants is irresistible, a furiously-paced shriek of cocksure youth.
The cry of "C'mon we're young" sounds trite in isolation, but in context, is perhaps their motto.
With the encore comes Hooting & Howling and is otherworldly and wonderful. You imagine moments like this gave them their name.
This is a band that takes concentration and dedication. Occasionally, it sounds like an opera, a Lake District opera. Truly very exciting.
